“The electric energy used on my farm is now generated by the solar panel system. The idea to implement the solar panel system came from the high costs of electrical energy. Therefore, in my project stemming from the Entrepreneurship and Rural Management course provided by the Growing-Up Right Institute, I learned about new technologies for the farm, so I researched deeply into sustainable energy matters. This made me conclude that solar energy would be beneficial because it reduces electricity costs, impacting on production benefits and on family expenses. In the final course project, I planned the acquisition of solar panels, which represent a sustainable, economical form of energy, thus helping the family with reducing electricity expenses, whilst promoting an improvement to the efficiency of the tobacco curing barns. As soon as the course came to a close, I and my family started to get our ideas off the paper and we purchased the panels, which have already been installed and are now in operation.
To me, the experience of a young apprentice of the Growing-Up Right Institute was incredible, both for acquiring more knowledge about rural areas and rural activities, and for having made new friends. Equally, my way of looking at the rural scenario, in general, improved considerably. The activities of the course resulted into nice dialogs with my family on questions related to the potentialities of the farm and possible improvements, as there were production issues I ignored, and the course played an essential role for me to learn about new possibilities that could be put into practice in the farm. I also realized that rural areas offer good chances for young people, provided there is dedication and the search for new knowledge”.
